    Biscuit Jar
    WATER HEN
Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c1890
    This child's transferware
    biscuit jar or sugar box
    ,
circa 1890, was originally part of an early child's play tea set. The color is
    country
red against a creamy white earthenware.
    The
    octagonal shaped
    covered jar
    stands 4-
    1
    /4 inches tall. It
features a water hen or Guinea Hen (the English name for the American Coot ) feeding in a lily pond with cat tails and reeds.
The image repeats on each side of the base.
The background is an aesthetic composition of lush flowers, swallows, and an inset of a castle. There is a zig zag patterned trim along the rim.
This pattern is pictured and discussed in Lorraine Punchard's Playtime Porcelain and Pottery as well as Petra Williams' Romantic Staffordshire.
    The
    jar
    is
    un
    marked.
    T
    he pattern name
    is
WATER HEN, made by Charles Allerton and Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets.
    The
    piwxw
    is
    in great condition, with
    spoon dings inside the
    lid

no chips cracks or repairs.  Fine overall glaze crazing and minor typical manufacturing imperfections associated with these early primitive children's wares, original to the making.  Overall, a clean and clear example.
