REDUCED FOR QUICK SALE - MOVINGNOTE:
If you are local, you may pick it up (using a certified piano mover).
However, it can be shipped anywhere in the USA or abroad.
Shipping pianos has become far less expensive over the decade. Around 75% of pianos are
now bought online, so there are specialists picking up and dropping them off throughout the
country and shipping them overseas. I can probably find you the best deal although it's always helpful for a buyer to check
local companies as well.
For sale is a fine treasure - a 1900 Knabe Parlor Grand restored by one of the finest technicians in
Southern California (and beyond), Emil Grakov. (I did not restore the piano myself!)
It appears that this piano had 3 owners (including me). Serial #:47782. The piano was custom
built and each of the original 88 whippens had the owner's name, key number and serial number.
During that era, it took about 2 years to build a Knabe grand. The original whippens needed
replacement. I wish I had kept a couple for historic continuity.
I'm a pianist, so my primary concern was bringing back this wonderful instrument to its
original glory.
There are original parts that did not warrant replacement: the pin block, the sound board and
the ivory and ebony keys, which are in fine condition.
The restoration included a full restringing with new pins, most of the action is new (Sep/Oct 2019) -
hammers, custom whippens (each of which had to be modified for a piano of that era), jacks,
dampers
and rebushing when needed.
A full regulation, voicing and tuning completed the job. The action is consistent throughout all registers
and the sound is rich and full. It's history at your fingertips.
The case of the piano is walnut with beautiful grain. The walnut seat is most likely not original, but it is functional and strong.
NOTE:
For those who are not familiar with the Knabe, the company was founded by a German piano maker
who emigrated to the USA. The first Knabes were built in 1837. By the late 19th century and into the
beginning of the 20th century, Knabe's primary competition was Steinway, each earning numerous gold
medals at various competitions for their quality, touch and sound. Knabe sponsored Tchaikovsky's
trip to NYC for the opening of Carnegie Hall in 1891. At the time, he was perhaps the most famous
composer, conductor and pianist in the world. During that period, many of the great composers and
pianists chose Knabes for their unique attributes. (Interesting Fact: Albert Einstein owned a Knabe.)
