We are commemorating the full live debut of
Pink Floyd's
The Dark Side Of The Moon
with official limited edition art, to be released 50 years to the day of the historic concert that occurred on January 21, 1972!
Pink Floyd's
The Dark Side Of The Moon
is arguably the most recognizable album in rock and roll history. Spending a record-breaking 741 weeks on the US top albums Billboard charts, the release cemented Pink Floyd’s reputation as the premiere rock band of a generation.
After technical difficulties halted Floyd’s first performance on January 20, 1972, the group took the stage one night later on
January 21st
and delivered the first-ever, full-length performance of
The Dark Side Of The Moon
. The audience in Portsmouth, UK unknowingly witnessed music history on that date, with literally millions (probably billions) of people having been profoundly affected by the
The Dark Side Of The Moon
. They heard it live first.
Everything about the album, including the gatefold sleeve and packaging artwork by Hipgnosis that has become synonymous with the band itself. The band challenged Hipgnosis to create a "simple and bold" design, and they delivered the most iconic album cover and packing in history. To further create thought provocation, the album also included a poster and stickers, two of which are pictured below:
To commemorate this date in music history, that also recognizes the unmistakable and culturally relevant album art and packaging inserts by Hipgnosis, we asked the talented MURUGIAH to tackle this project for us, and thankfully he said yes:
"Wow what can I say, getting to work on a project for the legendary Pink Floyd. A band who’s psychedelic music goes hand in hand with my art style and way of thinking. A match made in heaven? I think so. The difficulty came when I was asked by the wonderful folks at Collectionzz to tackle Floyd’s The Dark Side of The Moon in poster form. An album in which the artwork is as famous as the record itself. My choice of going in the total opposite direction in terms of complexity, form and colour was one that felt right at the time and I hope fans dig it.” - MURUGIAH
