    Description

Rare Miniature Pearlware Childs Toy Handleless Cup & Saucer
    PEONY FLOWER
    Staffordshire, England c. 1820
This is a superb miniature transferware teabowl or handleless cup and saucer. Originally part of a child's complete tea set, the Chinese shaped cup stands a tiny 1-3/8 inches tall and the saucer measures 3-5/8 inches across the top rim. The color is a rich and earthy Van Dyke brown with a pearlware glaze. The piece is impeccably potted and light bodied, with a pearlware glaze. The central motif depicts a stylized peony or sweet pea flower, undulating out from the center and set off with a kaleidoscope of floral swirls around the rim, leaving very little white space. The bold border decoration is placed delicately along the inside rim of the cup.
The set is unmarked. The exact maker and the pattern name is unknown. It is attributed to one of the finer pottery makers in the Staffordshire district 1810-1825, or possibly Salop.
The piece is in  good overall condition with an underglaze rim graze on the foot rim and no other chips, cracks or repairs. Stilt marks on the edge, kiln kiss, glaze ponding, transfer wrinkle, all minor typical firing imperfections. This is a rare set, with everything going for it, perfect for all the early pearlware transferware fanciers and collectors of the finest doll dishes. Offered as is.
