This
little battered beauty
is a
rare Staffordshire English pearlware ministure tea set dating to c 1830.  The set is hand decorated with a
four
color enamel polychrome leaf motif painted
red green blue and black
on a creamy earthenware ground. This painted ware has beautiful colorful styling with button finials.
The set is un
signed
and t
he maker is not known but it hails from the Staffordshire England ,
or possibly one of the northern potteries,
in the early half of the nineteenth century.
The set includes:

lid, 4 inches tall
on four little bun feet
, 6 inches from spout to handle
(broken/reglued handle, chip on one foot, chip on finial, nibbles on tip of spout, worn inner rim)
Sugar with
inset
lid, 3-1/
4
inches tall,
4-1/4
inches long
(chip on top rim, broken/reglued handle)
Creamer 2-1/2 inches tall, 3 inches long
(hairline behind handle)
3
cups
with handles,
1-
1
/
2
inches tall, 2-
1/2
inches across
(chips on 2 cups, hairline on 1) and
3
saucers 4-/
4
inches across
(1 hairline).
The set is in only
fair
condition,
as described above.
No other chips cracks or repairs.
The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect it...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. Runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge frits original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm.
Offered as is,
as described and as shown
.
Still a great display set, greatly loved by the generations of children who played with it.
Just a beautiful colorful hand painted tea set,
hard to find and quite desirable. The influence of Victoria’s love of nature is evident in the design. The pieces
were well loved, and
will make a fabulous addition to your collection of early hand painted earthenwares.
