Antique Romantic Staffordshire Blue Transferware Pitcher
This fine and early English Staffordshire
pottery jug or pitcher measures 8" high to the top of the arched and leaf-embossed handle.
The bright white background is highly glazed and decorated with a crisp transferware pattern featuring a romantic scene of domed Romanesque buildings, arched bridges and a woman in the foreground by a balustered garden wall.
Luxurious flowers and patterned scrollwork frame the scene and are repeated around the neck and the interior of the rim.
The body has gentle melon fluting, the rim is reverse scrolled, and the spout is embossed with additional flutes and leaves.
A flared foot ring competes the profile and is decorated with small sprays of flowers.
The base is unmarked.
(The three indentations are stile marks from the stacking of the pottery in the kiln.)
The interior is very clean with just a sprinkling of tiny glaze pops in the bottom.
I found only a tiny dip under the spout which I believe was made during production as it is unstained and appears top be
under the glaze.
The pitcher is in otherwise exceptionally fine antique condition.
