Description
Henry Steinway’s factory located in Long Island was adjacent to the Herter Brothers’ cabinet shop. Both worked for Steinway in the 1850s and continued their collaboration when they opened their own studios and designed for the most fabulous mansions in the gilded age. In 1858, Gustave & Christian Herter modified a dark rosewood Steinway concert grand piano. It was their first attempt to modify Steinway’s rococo case. Comparing it with my piano, the inlay and music rack are different, but the legs are very similar. The piano with the European high gloss finish is played on a daily basis in my residence. It is tuned to 440A, current orchestra tuning, and could be used on any concert stage; remarkable 150 years later. I have been in the antique business, Antiquarian Traders, for over 40 years and will share some of the great treasures that I still own and in my personal collection. My personal taste has always been the American Victorian Rococo, Egyptian Revival and Renaissance Revival periods.
